University Admissions Preparation

Helping to secure your place to study Economics at University

Securing a place at a top university to study Economics is about so much more than just strong A-Level grades.

For the more competitive Economics university courses, securing your place is dependent on performance across multiple stages of the admissions process, from writing that perfect personal statement, to excelling in admissions exams and university interviews. Each stage requires a different skill set and knowing how to approach them strategically can make a decisive difference.

We offer expert support across all aspects of university preparation, whether you require focused help with a specific stage or guidance throughout the entire admissions journey.

So if you are starting early or approaching key deadlines, we can help you to present yourself with confidence, clarity and intellectual depth that helps you stand out amongst your peers.

How we work

Complimentary initial consultation (video call)

We begin with a complementary consultation to help us to identify where our guidance will have the greatest impact. This may focus on preparation for TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions), the refinement of personal statements or building confidence ahead of university interviews.

During the consultation, we establish:

  • Current progress on personal statements.
  • Which universities and Economics courses you are considering.
  • Whether admissions tests such as the TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) are required.
  • Level of familiarity with admissions tests.
  • Confidence with academic discussions and interviews.
  • Scholarly competence and pedagogical ability.

This allows us to recommend a clear and tailored approach to support you.

Internal review and tailored roadmap (video call)

Following the call, we meet to discuss your needs and within 24-hours, we aim to send a detailed proposal outlining a tailored plan based on your priorities, timeline and chosen area of focus.

This may include:
Ongoing support to develop and refine your personal statement.
A concentrated block of admissions test preparation.
Structured interview preparation closer to the interview stage.
Or a combination of all three aspects, delivered in line with the admissions timeline.

If you wish to proceed, sessions are scheduled at mutually convenient times, with guidance provided on how to prepare to get the most out of each session. As the admissions cycle progresses, support can be adapted accordingly if required.

With the approach agreed, sessions are then focused on the specific demands of each stage of the admissions process.

How we can help with University Admissions preparation

Personal Statement Support

Your personal statement is one of the few opportunities for you to distinguish yourself in a highly competitive field. With many applicants expecting similar predicted grades, it is often the originality of the statement that will set you apart from your peers.

Our support is centred on helping you to navigate the specific requirements set by UCAS, while mastering the more nuanced challenge of knowing what to say, what not to say and how to communicate a genuine passion for Economics that resonates with admissions teams, all within a tightly constrained format.

Whether you are starting early and are looking for direction on supercurricular reading and activities that can help strengthen your knowledge of Economics and subsequently help to create a more authentic statement, or if you already have a first draft that you want to refine and elevate to maximise its impact, we can help.

Between us, we bring over 40 years of teaching experience and have supported thousands of Economics students through the personal statement process, including through our work with careers teams at leading independent schools. Many of these students have gone on to secure places on highly competitive Economics courses at top universities.

As graduates of Oxford University ourselves, we also draw on first-hand experience of the admissions process, both in the understanding of what universities are looking for and how a well-crafted personal statement can shape the direction of an interview.

If you need help with your personal statement, we would love to hear from you.

Admissions Exam Preparation (e.g. TARA, Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions)

For a small number of highly competitive Economics courses, performance in admissions exams such as the TARA (formerly TSA) is a critical factor.

These assessments differ significantly from the A-Level exams. They are designed to test reasoning, ability, problem-solving and intellectual agility – skills that require both understanding and sustained practice to develop.

Our Economics Admissions Exam support sessions begin by building a clear understanding of the exam format, including the structure of different papers, time constraints and question types. From there we guide you through key techniques required for success, including the seven core critical thinking question types.

A significant emphasis is placed on working through past papers, allowing you to apply the strategies that you have learnt in realistic conditions to refine your approach. Regular practice, paired with detailed feedback will enable you to build both accuracy and confidence ahead of the exams.

The beauty of our tailored approach also means that we have the flexibility to shift focus where required so that we can provide targeted Economics support for university admissions where required to maximise your time with us.

If you need help with admissions exam preparation, we would love to hear from you.

University Interview Preparation

Whilst not all universities hold interviews, those that are particularly competitive (such as Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London) often perform interviews to assess factors such as; academic potential beyond grades, to gauge your genuine passion for Economics and even to evaluate personality and fit.

These admissions interviews can often feel like a daunting part of the process, but in reality they’re not interrogations, but conversations intended to explore how you think, respond to new ideas and engage with Economics as a subject, beyond the textbooks.

Our interview preparation support focuses on building both confidence and capability. You will learn how to approach unfamiliar problems, articulate your thinking clearly and engage in thoroughly academic discussion with an Economics expert.

We also help you to understand the dynamics of the interview itself, how to navigate challenging questions, develop ideas collaboratively and demonstrate genuine intellectual engagement.

The goal here is not to give you a script, but equip you with the skills to think, respond and communicate effectively in a high-pressure environment.

If you need help with university interview preparation, we would love to hear from you.
